The Bra Boys
By Guy Incognito of Boardauctions.com
The group began back as a small surf club back in 1966. The Bra Boys (Short for Maroubra) as they were known later on began as a small group of kids who were then known as Ma's Hell Team. This small group of poverty stricken kids which consisted of the now well known Aberton brothers had a very rough childhood. With parents who pushed them away for a life of drug addiction, they were left to fend for themselves on the streets of the Sydney suburb of Maroubra. Maroubra back in the day was riddled with drugs, crime, street violence and broken families. Maroubra is also home to the largest and best surfing beach in Sydneys now affluent Eastern Suburbs. With nowhere else to turn the boys found their refuge in surfing. It was through Surfing and the Aberton brothers Grandmother, Mavis (who they referred to as "Ma") who took them in with open arms that they developed their bonds and love of the ocean. The Boys formed a surf club from pretty much the day they could walk which they called "Ma's hell team". This was later to become The Bra Boys. The boy's spent their childhood in the care of Mavis and when they weren't surfing they were drinking, troubling the police and waging turf wars. With countless encounters and numerous arrests The Bra Boys earnt themselves a reputation as the most notorious surf tribe in Sydney. The police no doubt prefer the word Gang. With gangland style brawls, murders and all out thuggery not many people thought the boys would amount to much. How wrong they were. Sunny and Jai Aberton went onto become professional surfers for sometime while Koby Aberton is now one of the worlds best big wave surfers. Not to mention the doccumenty narrated bt Russel Crowe (Who was a South Sydney local as a kid) that bought the tribes noriety to the rest of the world. Even the premier of the film consisted of a huge brawl. The Bra Boys tribe still thrives today with many of it's members being high profile footballers and sports personalities. The brawls continue too this day although not as often. Maroubra these days is far less rough than what it was it still has it's housing commissions and surfers at Maroubra still tread carefully when in the water. Localism at Maoubra beach is by far still the most intimidating out of all of Sydneys beaches. |

Fascinating stuff! When people from other countries think of Australia, they usually don't think of the mean streets of Sydney!
